COVID Adaptation Phase X: Reflection from DopeSick

OxyContin: Between Malevolence, Incompetence, Suffering, Grief and 'Denying History'

There is a really moving docudrama called Dopesick about the opioid scandal in the US. It is the story of how Purdue Pharma, owned by the Sackler family, relentlessly pushed and profited from a pain relief drug that killed and destroyed thousands of American people's lives. It is not a unique story, but certainly becoming canonical in global public awareness, I hope.

Produced by Hulu and available in the UK on Disney,  it is a great introduction to how evil pharmaceutical companies and medical regulators can be, how duped medical professionals can be and how powerless their victims are, unless something virtuous, sustained and unrelenting aligned in the direction of justice is mobilised. Even though the series delivers its own dopamine hits and ends on a positive note, e.g. state authorities taking Purdue to court and winning damages, basically the wealthy have gotten away with corporate murder.

While many cultural institutions in the US have removed the name of the Sackler family from the buildings that these Greedy Sacklers sucked out of their victims, Britain's cheapskate institutions have been slower off the mark. There is a devilish Opium Warrior irony to New Labour's gutless wonder folding his dismissal of moral responsibility into his brush off of the righteous iconoclasm pouring out of the murder of George Floyd.

What has this got to do with the pandemic?

Maybe we feel that the NHS protects us from these excesses, with NICE pathways, the negotiating position of such huge buying power and all the good doctors and nurses trying their hardest with Borg-like collectivity....

For healthy, transformative adaptation in the direction of Justice, I feel that we must continue to empower each other to know better what is being done to us, and navigate our own miXtrust issues, the n(sh)arr(ll)owness of publicly permitted discourse, the feelings of different sorts of traumatised health workers, the highly compromised edicts of the surveillance state, what is knowable on the sciences front and what is doable about all these things on the life front.

I intend to update/improve this annotated list.

Pfizer were recently forced to release some data on adverse affects reported after their vaccine. To scale my concern, the unknowable unknown that bothers me much more than this is the number of people killed and harmed in underreported places.

There are three youtube channels I've found interesting and I'm at least a 7 on the Ivermectin Hoper Spectrum.

Dr John Campbell an experienced academic nurse who has been video blogging about the disease since before anyone in the UK too it seriously. More enthusiastic about Vitamin D than, say decoloniality. Getting more and more pissed at medical corruption with time.

Dr Tim Spektor and The ZOE Project (Aka Dr Poo) academic and doctor based at KCL who focusses on gut health and nutrition. His spin off company has taken a Citizen Science approach to understanding disease prevalence and changing symptoms and the years have rolled on. Unlikely to sing from the minaret that Machine Leaning and Citizen Science are sh!t.

Dr Mubeen Syed (Aka Dr Beanz) , US based physician and medical educator who has great drawing skills and gets very science in a human biology sort of fashion.

One channel I've found infuriatingly egotistical but keep an eye on sometimes to anticipate what 'outrage' might pop out of some people.

The Dark Horse podcast - husband and wife biologists in the sin bin combo Brett Weinstein and Heather Heying are a challenge, their (q)white popularity illustrates the epistemic autism of many STEM people, most of whom lack the erudition to express themselves with such conviction and self certainty. Weinstein got himself cancelled from cushier academic life a few years back. Penchant for antiIslam guests and evolutionary explanations for their underpants.

[New Word] Statestical

The dominant form of nonsensemaking in our age, where numbers are harvested for government and corporate benefit as part of patriarchal epistemicidal neoliberal capitalism

Islam's quantum question talk

So I went to the city circle event this friday for a bit to take my mind of my toofache and hear what  Nidhal Guessoum had to say about the Islam and Science debate. His book ' Islam's Quantum Question' is out now.

Nidhal is an astro physicist  from Algeria, with a US PhD and a little NASA Lab post doc experience. Presently he is a prof at the American university of sharjah, is academically quite published, teaches and appears a lot of Gulf TV channels. It was chaired by Ehsan Masood, who knows and writes in the space quite well.

He observed that Islam and science comes up in a couple of variants.

  • The Historical Civilisational Navel Gaze
  • Philosophically natured debates on the Nature of Knowledge
  • Practical applications of science to ritual issues.
  • Modernist-Iman-bolstering Its-in-the-Quranism

I liked his walk though previous serious contributions in the area (Sardar- Ethical, Salam- Universal, Nasr -Sacred) and his problematisation of the Harun Yahya/scientific Miracles in the Quran brigade.

Perhaps he over-egged this last issue as a hat tip to Usamafest. Shades of Hoodhboy Syndrome, 'These ridiculous natives and their ridiculous beliefs' came through at the audience level. I think this is an unfair and naive characterisation of Our collective curiosity but he was talking from his experience and quite a positivist type mind set.

We need tools to move thinking forward on this issue otherwise the level of dialogue and epistemological negotiation will remain at a very post graduate common room/prayer room level. this book is one of those devices I hope.

So far the encounter has me wondering how arab/gulf centric, indicator fed  and blind to politics, dignity and need the presentation was.

If Muslims have a 'childlike' approach to science, especially evolution, then the one I heard was adolescent. I say this because it wasn't a sense of inspiration and wonder that I got, but an 'I am imprisoned by the small mindedness of my people' frustration. Its just not an optimal position from which to speak.

When he reduced the envelope of possibilities of 'Islamic Science' to 'optional interpretive layer'  I felt that he'd dropped the can at the point of the creative step. Just like when Jasser Auda disappointingly dovetails into UN human rights and millennium development goals after beautifully excavating the history of maqasid al sharia thinking.

In today's situation, Islamic social movements  must approach the Islam and Science space with a better approach than any that are readily on offer.  Our politics and programmes must have an epistemic quality. We also mustn't divorce art from science ( from religion ) when bringing up our children as well as when identifying and thinking through our problems .

this is long.

Constellations, a journal from IMASE

This hybrid journal/newsletter is an electronic quarterly publication from IMASE. There have been five editions so far, focussing on Muslim perspectives on science, society and technology.

This quarter's issue features: bioethics, unemployment, usamafest, political sciences, approaches to the Quran.

Worth reading and circulating.

Imamic emission

A list of voicings concerning the production of ummahtic stupidity surrounding tawhid mosque,  muslim perspectives on evolution and Shayk Usama Hasan.

"Why don't you educated people keep your science in the university? This is a mosque."
"Don't go creating fitna over here!"
"Are you saying that the Prophet Adam's came from apes?"
"Let him speak, I want to hear hear if he's a kaafir myself!"
"These fuckers irritate me so much, I actually have sympathy for the EDL."
"Bro Usama, I am behind you. If there is someone that issues you a death threat, give me his name, I will come there myself and YANK HIS BEARD OUT WITH MY OWN HANDS! "
"[He] should be commended, hes doing what we never did, put[ting] his balls on the line"
Indeed there is faya between the kuns. And the Trustees are on faya

The paternal grandfather of the Bangladeshi Nuclear Establishment Dr Anwar Hossain is no longer with us...

innalillahi wa innailayhi rajiun.

A reflection on the life of a very intelligent institution builder , by my favourite advisor to the CareTaker Government in Bangladesh, who was a)recruited by him , b)regarded him as a mentor and c) presumably went to his janaza.

Marhum Dr Anwar Hossain won a Gold medal from Dhaka University in 1950. His specialisms were nuclear energy, remote sensing (thats acquiring and interpreting imagery of the earth from above and solar energy.

His approach to solar energy was NOT sissymarka, and his involvement in Remote Sensing and Nuclear issues were at the highest national levels. If we valued the sciences in a more balanced way wrt petty capitalism, poetry, literature and NGOgiri, and trusted these folks with more resources, they would have done us proud. We need to make more of our legendary scientists and engineers, to inspire the youth and balance the noisy irrationals(like me) who have little or nothing to contribute but insist upon having our foolishness represented.

I wish i could have learnt from him directly, might have even been more inclined to have stayed in physics if i could have seen such a trail blazer in action. Here's an abstract of a paper of his in Physics Review of 1957.

Allah grant him Jannah, his family and close ones comfort, us the living more of these world class constructive sorts and bangladesh and the ummah the social technique with which to nurture them.

Dr CS Karim recollects and takes stocks of the man's virtues in his obituary, im listing some.

Decisive
Disciplined
Scrutinising of documentation
Encouraging
Frustration busting
Communicative (distinct from drunken abuse of eloquence)
Accessible to and engaging with the humble and the noble
Brave (distinct from opportunistic or foolhardy)

One thing i wonder about is how he came to become chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission in 1976. As an admirer of the virtues of the Old BNP (an identity which i have pinched and adapted from a respondent of mine). I naively assume that his talents were seen and integrated into the nationally utilised stockpile of intellectual goods by the late General Zia. Assume, because there is a pattern that I'm only just beginning to see emerge through observing aged accomplished national expertise as it passes on into the akhira, hobbles to and from the mosque, or nostalgically recollects the tough days when knowledge institutions were built from tinsheds, ingenuity and intellectual virility, rather than air conditional development dolarism.

Fitting tributes?
Annual lecture
Scholarship/endowment for physics research administered by the BD atomic commission (not DU because they are mean minded).
A decent writup in the Banglapedia.
Documentary on his life by the cheeky chappies at banglavision perchance?
